ABOUT ATC FANATICS

This is an informal group account, created as a shop window Gallery for deviants of all persuasions who are interested in making, displaying and possibly exchanging Artist's Trading Cards.

If you are new to ATCs there are really only two basic rules:
(1) Size is 2½ inches × 3½ inches / 6 × 9 cm(either portrait or landscape orientation)
(2) Cards are never sold, but always traded

ACEOs are identical in format to ATCs. The name stands for "Art Cards, Editions and Originals", and ACEOs are generally made for sale, rather than for trade. Visit *ACEO-Addict if you're interested.

Some guidelines:
(1) Cards can be one-off originals, or limited editions (ie you print out a limited number of digital works).
(2) On the back of the card is the artist's name, contact details, title of the card, and the date created. If you have printed a limited series, the card should also have the number on it (eg #1 of 5)

Otherwise, the sky's the limit - any medium (watercolour, oils, acrylic, crayon, pastels, photography, fabric, metal, polymer clay, plexiglass, collage, lithograph, 3D elements etc etc) and any message. (Although I do reserve the right not to fav and therefore feature unfortunate material.)

WANT TO GET INVOLVED?
Step 1: Make an ATC (or two or three)
Step 2: Post it to your own DeviantArt page. (Put ATC in as a keyword / tag)
Step 3: Note me here to let me know you've posted it, and I'll fav it so it appears in the Gallery.
Step 4: Visit the Gallery often (You might like to become a formal Watcher so you receive journal entry updates, but because all the deviations are added to the Favorites Gallery, you won't be aware of new ATCs being featured.)
Step 5: If you see a card you like posted by another Deviant, you can comment on their site, asking to trade a card with them, and the two of you take it from there to mail each other the agreed-upon exchange.

TRADING
You don't HAVE to trade if you don't want to. Some cards in this Gallery are not for trade or exchange, but are included for inspiration and eye-candy.

Many artists have specific preferences as to what kinds of cards they prefer to trade for, or are particularly interested in collecting. All of us are free to specify these preferences and to turn down a trade if the card being offered in exchange is not what we want - with no hard feelings either side!

PROTOCOL AND GOOD MANNERS!
If you DO undertake to trade with a fellow deviant, you do need to follow through on your undertaking, and send your card to them as soon as possible. It makes people really miserable if they trade in good faith and receive nothing in return - and it may mean that they withdraw from trading entirely, which deprives all of us of an opportunity to share in their art.

Creativity Contest

Tue Nov 10, 2009, 1:33 AM
So maybe it was an uninspiring theme?
Maybe we're all feeling uncreative?
But, really, people? Four entries?

So here's a last-ditch challenge.
Maybe CREATIVITY is just too big a theme.
Break it down.
Pick a letter - any letter - out of the word, and see if you can make a card using an idea or image suggested by that letter; linked in some (lateral and creative!) way to creativity.

For example (I'm sure you can do better than these, but feel free to plagiarise if one of them tickles you) ~

C is for "Holy Cow! I am soo blocked ..."; or for "Caffeine - can't create without it"

R is for "Racking my brains ..." and the consequent diagnosis of BrainRot

E is for "Eureka!. No ... uh ... Cancel that ... it's still not working."

A is for Angst and Agitation and Abstraction and Anomie

T is for Temptation to buy just one more pack of playing cards

I is for "Ideas ~ I ain't got any!" (or - "I got too many and they're running amok!")

V is for the Violence of the creative struggle; or for the Beckoning Void

I is for "I yam an artist, yes indeed I yam!"

T is for Titillating Topics (oh please, somebody has to do this one!)

Y is for "Yeees!" when it all comes together; or for Yawn, when it doesn't; or for the "loud barbaric Yawp" of creative expression. (Gold star to whoever correctly identifies the source of that quotation.)

More inspired yet?
C'mon, you can do it.
One measly card?
Eight letters to choose from?
Deadline extended to Monday 30th November?

  • Mood: Torment

November ATC Contest

The theme for our next contest is Creativity.

Not a new concept, and there are lots of deviations on this theme already ~ check out the News article at [link]
Most of them have fairly predictable images - lightbulbs, exploding skulls, shattering fountains of colour.
What can you do with the concept that's really creative?
What does creativity mean to you?
Where does it come from?
What's it for?
What's the dark side to creativity?
What's its antithesis?
You can go abstract, literal, symbolic, tragic, comedic - it's wide open.

Here are some definitions and quotations to provoke you into a creative spurt!
(The rules and other boring stuff are all the way at the bottom of this post.)

Websters Dictionary
Creativity is marked by the ability or power to create, to bring into existence, to invest with a new form, to produce through imaginative skill, to make or bring into existence something new.

Carl Rogers
"Creativity is the emergence of a novel, relational product, growing out of the uniqueness of the individual."

Arthur Koestler
"Creativity is a type of learning process where the teacher and pupil are located in the same individual."

Edwin Land
"Creativity is the sudden cessation of stupidity."

Erich Fromm
"Conditions for creativity are to be puzzled; to concentrate; to accept conflict and tension; to be born everyday; to feel a sense of self."

Saul Steinberg
"The life of the creative man is lead, directed and controlled by boredom. Avoiding boredom is one of our most important purposes."

Rollo May
"Creativity arises out of the tension between spontaneity and limitations, the latter (like the river banks) forcing the spontaneity into the various forms which are essential to the work of art or poem."

Margaret Wheatley
"The things we fear most in organizations - fluctuations, disturbances, imbalances - are the primary sources of creativity."

Dee Hock
"The problem is never how to get new, innovative thoughts into your mind, but how to get old ones out. Every mind is a building filled with archaic furniture. Clean out a corner of your mind and creativity will instantly fill it."

Scott Adams
"Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep."

Jung
“But, if you have nothing at all to create, then perhaps you create yourself.”

George Prince
“Another word for creativity is courage”

Ray Bradbury
“Don't think. Thinking is the enemy of creativity. It's self-conscious, and anything self-conscious is lousy. You can't try to do things. You simply must do things.”

Julia Cameron
“Creativity - like human life itself - begins in darkness.”
